C&K has developed a surface-mount side-actuated switch with a small footprint, an anti-shear option, and life up to 100,000 cycles.

Called the PTS 840 series, the momentary action switches are 3.5×3.55mm with travel of 0.2mm (+0.2/-0.1mm).

G and J-lead types are available and, for added (but not quantified) shear resistance, there is the ‘P’-lead type (picture below) which is similar to the G-lead product with the two leads nearest the front edge bent downwards 0.6mm to be soldered into plated through holes – in effect these two contacts are semi-through hole. Plastic alignment pegs are an option on G and J types.

“J leads need to be soldered with 0.1mm solder paste thickness. Below this value, shock resistance will be decreased. A G lead version could easily replace it,” said the firm. “P leads are recommended for applications where shear resistance is of importance. When a precise alignment between application button and the switch is requested, versions with pegs are the right choice to limit the possible floating of the switch during soldering.”

There is also a static discharge (ESD) protection option which takes a tab from the switch’s metal frame to a pad on the PCB. This is designed to work only by dry contact with the PCB only, and must not be soldered.

Maximum electrical rating is 12Vdc and 50mA (<500mΩ contact). Dielectric strength is 250Vac and insulation resistance is at least 100MΩ.

Bounce is under 10ms, and the switch will operate between -40 and 85°C.

Applications are expected in in portable devices, remote controls, personal health diagnostics, and consumer electronics applications.

“Within personal health diagnostic and monitoring systems, these smaller designs can be made less intrusive, and more functions can be controlled within a single structure,” said C&K product manager Jerome Smolinski.

Lead time is eight weeks.
